Get to know your skin

How do you recognize your skin type and care for it optimally?

The skin is the largest organ in our body and plays a major role in our health and appearance. Understanding your skin type is essential for choosing the right skincare products and developing a routine that makes your skin glow. In this blog, we discuss the different skin types and provide tips on how to take good care of them.

The five skin types

There are five basic skin types: normal, dry, oily, combination and sensitive. Each skin type has unique characteristics and needs.

1. Normal skin

Normal skin is balanced: not too dry and not too oily. It has an even complexion, fine pores and few to no impurities.

Care tips:

  • Use a mild cleanser to keep skin clean and moisturized.
  • Choose a light, hydrating cream with SPF for daily protection.
  • Exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells.

2. Dry skin

Dry skin often feels tight and may show flakes or redness. This skin type produces less sebum, which can weaken the skin barrier.

Care tips:

  • Choose a rich, nourishing cream with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
  • Avoid harsh cleansers; opt for a hydrating cleanser.
  • Protect your skin against cold and wind with an extra caring layer.

3. Oily skin

Oily skin produces excess sebum, which can lead to a shiny face and enlarged pores. Often this skin is more prone to acne and blackheads.

Care tips:

  • Use a foaming or gel cleanser to remove excess sebum.
  • Choose oil-free moisturizers and products that are non-comedogenic.
  • Exfoliate regularly to keep pores clean and prevent impurities.

4. Combination skin

Combination skin has characteristics of both dry and oily skin. Often the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) is oilier, while the cheeks are drier.

Care tips:

  • Use products specially developed for combination skin.
  • Apply moisturizing products to dry areas and mattify the T-zone with a light cream.
  • Exfoliate gently to maintain balance without irritating the skin.

5. Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin reacts quickly to external factors, such as perfumes, temperature changes or certain ingredients. This can lead to redness, itching or irritations.

Care tips:

  • Choose hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products.
  • Avoid alcohol in skin care products as it can dry out the skin.
  • Soothe the skin with ingredients such as aloe vera or chamomile.

How do you discover your skin type?

Determining your skin type is not complicated. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Cleanse your face with a mild cleanser and pat dry.
  2. Leave your skin without products for 1-2 hours.
  3. Observe how your skin feels:
    • Is it tight? Then you probably have dry skin.
    • Is your T-zone shiny? Then your skin is oily or combination.
    • Does it stay neutral? Then you have normal skin.

A skin type changes

It is important to know that your skin type can change due to age, seasons, hormones or lifestyle. So pay attention to your skin's signals regularly and adjust your routine if necessary.
