Skin Care in Winter🥶 10 Tips for Healthy Skin

The (Dutch) winter can be a challenge for your skin. Cold temperatures, low humidity and heated indoor air can leave your skin dry, irritated and dull. But with the right skincare routine, you can keep your skin supple and hydrated, even during the coldest days. In this blog, we share 10 essential tips to protect your skin and make it glow in the winter.

1. Choose a rich moisturizer

In the winter, your skin loses moisture more quickly, so it’s important to switch to a thicker, richer moisturizer. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides to strengthen your skin’s barrier and lock in moisture.

2. Don't forget SPF

Although the sun may seem less powerful, UV rays can still damage your skin, especially if there is snow (if that ever happens) to reflect the rays. Wear a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day.

3. Avoid hot showers

A hot shower may be tempting on cold days, but it can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and limit your shower time to a maximum of 10 minutes.

4. Hydrate from within

Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration, even though you may feel less thirsty in the winter. You can also add water-based hydration boosters to your diet, such as cucumber, oranges, and watermelon.

5. Use a humidifier

The dry air indoors caused by heating systems can dry out your skin. A humidifier helps to maintain the humidity and prevents your skin from losing moisture.

6. Add facial oils to your routine

Facial oils provide an extra layer of protection against the cold. Use a few drops of argan, jojoba or rosehip oil after your moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

7. Exfoliate in moderation

Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and allows your skincare products to be better absorbed. But don’t overdo it, as too much exfoliation can damage your skin barrier. Choose a gentle exfoliant and limit it to once or twice a week.

8. Protect your lips and hands

Your hands and lips are extra sensitive to drying out in the winter. Use a nourishing lip balm with SPF and a rich hand cream to prevent cracks and chapping. Wear gloves when you go outside.

9. Avoid harsh detergents

Cleansers with harsh foaming agents can further dry out your skin. Instead, opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that preserves your skin's natural oils.

10. Eat a skin-friendly diet

Diet plays a huge role in the health of your skin. Choose foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, green leafy vegetables, and nuts. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and flaxseed, also help keep your skin hydrated.
